Interference, is part of an exchange project between the Enriched
Bread Artists of Ottawa (EBA) and Quartair Contemporary Art Initiatives.
Quartairs exhibition, Dutch Settlement, took place at the
EBA in Ottawa, May 31 June 10, 2013.
Fifteen EBA artists
highlight different aspects of interference in their works, from
the interruption of electronic signals to the obstacles life and
politics throw in the way of personal plans and aspirations. Primarily,
however, the concept of interference is re-enacted in this exhibition,
through the creation of a chain of events that begins with a spatial
intrusion into the Quartair gallery that will greatly impede the
installation of the art.

COLECCIONISMO Y OTRAS
Cruz Garcia & Laura
The show emerges
from the connections between the artists' works, as well from their
particular interests. Both use the recollection of common household
products that usually end discarded by society. This has been employed
by the artists as a tool to re-think, transform and reconfigure the
objects themselves and also their cultural meaning.
On the occasion of
her exhibition in Quartair, Laura will be swapping vegetable and tropical
fruit plants that she germinated in her studio for material or immaterial
goods. Whoever wants to take home a little plant may do so by getting
involved in this non-monetary exchange!
During the exhibition in Quartair, Melissa will be showing drawings,
installations and self-made machines. As also, will be giving a one
day long workshop on the 12th of July (from 13.00 till 17.00) on animation
with drawings, where the participants are also invited to reflect
and think in terms of obsolete technology.

From an empty building with
squatters to an officially recognized non-profit cultural breeding
ground, Quartair was founded in 1992 by a group of young artists after
graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Quartair
is located at The Hague Bread Factory, built in 1902, on the Toussaintkade.
Serendipitously, in 1992, when recent art graduates from Ottawa University
were looking for studio spaces, they set up shop in the abandoned
Standard Bread Factory in Ottawa. They became the Enriched Bread Artists
Thanks to Ottawa curator
and artist Petra Halkes, who was born in The Hague, the twins
will be re-united during Doors Open Ottawa in June 2013. EBA will
host a special exhibition, Dutch Settlement, organized by Quartair
artists, some of whom will be present. The participants are inspired
by various meanings of the word settlement, from the oldest
villages in the Low Countries to the founding of communities of colonists
and labour immigrants in the New World. During the opening,
Quartair artists will evoke the unique do it yourself
atmosphere that compelled them to squat in an empty bread factory
in the Dutch governmental city over twenty years ago.
