– beyond the border presents work of nine contemporary artists. On the occasion of a cultural exchange between South Tirol and The Hague. It
diplays a selection of works and performances that express a reaction to the reality of living in this region. Moved by a critical and extensive redrafting approach. The artists on show were chosen for their special way of relating to their territory, as well as for the peculiar way in which they express themselves through different mediums and symbols which are deeply related to their birthplaces.

The “show” case, Erfan Abdi
The “show” case is the title of an event consisting of three musical acts by Erfan Abdi. Each of these acts is performed using a different custom built musical instrument, and together they cover different sides of the artist’s research in the ?eld of instrument design for live electronic performances. Each musical instrument can have its unique design process and working principle, however all instruments share the fact that in order to be evaluated they need to be applied in their desig- nated context. The three instruments that are used in the “show” case not only differ from one another in terms of their design principles, but also happen to be at different stages of their design processes, from a ?rst tryout in case of LAMP, to examining new adjustments in case of Notesaaz, all in need for an evaluation. After the performing with all three instruments, the audience will have the chance to tryout the interfaces for themselves, and are invited to share their thoughts about their experiences, their vision of instrument design, and “what else can be made”.
About the artist Erfan Abdi Dezfouli (1983 – Tehran) is a designer and artist based in The Hague. He graduated in graphic design at
the university of Tehran in 2006, and finished the ArtScience (image & sound) Masters program at the Royal Conservatoire the Hague in 2011. Apart from his education he has experimented in electronic music composition, video produc- tion, computer programming and physical prototyping. His focus is on instrument design and staging the outcome of his research in performances and interactive experiences. Erfan Abdi has presented his work in several venues and places throughout the Nether- lands and abroad, including Todaysart, Arselectronica, NIME, Steim and Logos.

BRIQUE August 29 - September 26

An exhibition of six Belgium artists
Caroline Coolen, Stéphanie Leblon, Stefan Serneels, Anton Cotteleer, Hedwig Brouckaert en Hans Demeulenaere.

"Born with a brick in your stomach....”
The exhibition BRIQUE, exhibits the work of six Belgium artists. Five of them work in different media, but all have a clear affinity with ‘the figure', broken down and rebuilt, in fragments and abstraction. BRIQUE revers not only to construction and deconstruction in the work but also to the 'building mania' in Belgium. The sixth artist Hans Demeulenaere searches for the boundaries between scenography and installation and will build a sculptural installation with the use of bricks. His intervention integrates the works from Brouckaert, Coolen, Cotteleer, Leblon and Serneels in a monumental sculptural installation and will be reacting on the old industrial architecture of the exhibition space Quartair. Flemish art historian and curator Stef Van Bellingen wrote an accompanying essay and will open the exhibition.

This exhibition is made possible with support from
Stroom Den Haag, de Gemeente Den Haag, de Vlaamse Overheid en de Vlaamse vertegenwoordiging/Ambassade van België

Installation "Glinting honey in the dark, a feather tickling on my back."
Artists: Nishi Ko, Gabey Tjon, Sukebeningen
The Project Sukebeningen presents Japanese eroticism, inspired by the Dutch beach Scheveningen, as a form of collaborative works with invited artists. Its objective is to explore sensuality and to accommodate different views on eroticism each invited artist possesses. This time we develop a new work with two artists: Nishiko and Gabey Tjon a Tham. Using found objects and controlled kinetics, we make an installation that generates erotic feeling and may trigger one's erotic fantasy. Although dealing with a somewhat sensitive topic, the work welcomes diversity of visitors because of its balance between being entertaining and serious, open and private, exploring the contradicting possibilities of the subject. New media, art, science and technology come together in the New Media New Technology Open Lab Expo by creative researchers from the Media Technology MSc programme, and hosted by Quartair Contemporary Art Initiatives, The Hague. The Open Lab will not be a static expo, more a playful research space that mixes scientific approaches to art with creative approaches to science, for all audiences. The researchers work from personal inspiration and curiosity and create physical works to explore their concepts or engage the visitor to evoke ideas or questions. Many installations are interactive, some are early studies and prototypes, others will be more polished end products. The makers will be around to discuss the concepts, inspiration, ideas and methods behind their work, and even hack some more on the fly.

“The Second Explodes”
Dutch artists from Den Haag will come to Lana from April 28th until Mai 4th in the context of an artist’s exchange between Southern Tirol and Den Haag. The title, The Second Explodes, refers amongst others to an explosion of activities which will take place within a short time.
Apparently fleeting encounters (between artworks/public/artists) which can be experienced as a concentration of events. An explosion of events that will commence in each a stream of associations. Next to showing existing artworks the main starting point for the artists will be to create site-specific work and there will also be performances. The Second Explodes is a happening. There will be film, performance, drawings, paintings, installations and sound. And don’t miss the ARTWALK!
A master of ceremonies will accompany the visitors and he will put the different happenings and artworks in the spotlight.
